Live traps are the best option which works well when some food item is placed in the cage-likee trap. The scent of the bait attracts the rats when they come inside it and its weight causes the door of the cage to shut down immediately. Then the trap can be taken at the origin of the rats where they are found in the majority. Live traps should be checked frequently so the rat may not suffer.  This is a safer and humane technique of keeping the rats away from the house.

Ammonia 

Ammonia is the best repellent for rats. Ammonia has a strong and bitter smell that disturbs rats. We can spray ammonia in the holes so the rats cannot enter into the house. However, direct spraying is discouraged. 

Eliminate food and water 

By eliminating food and water sources, this may reduce rats to enter into the house. When they do not get a sufficient amount of food they may not come.  We should keep our surroundings clean and food should be kept in sealed boxes.

Steel wool

Steel wool is the best technique that helps to block the rat's access points. Steel wool helps as a barrier and acts as a hindrance for the rats. It will be extremely problematic for them to bite the steel wool so they would ultimately give up in passing through the holes.

Mothballs

Mothballs are very effective in keeping rats away from houses. Mothballs can be easily available and it is a very good repellent.
